Bhaskar Mukherjee, Indian Pakhawaj Artist, Kolkata

Bhaskar is a Pakhawaj artist, born in a family of musicians in Kolkata. Born on Nov 19th 1961, Bhaskar has dedicated his entire life to Indian Classical Music by trying to learn the art of playing probably India's most ancient Classical Percussion Instrument.

He has received `B-High’ in Pakhawaj and `B’ grade in Tabla from AIR. Sur-Sringar Samsad, Mumbai has awarded him with `TALMANI’ for playing Pakhawaj.

His Music & Education in Pakhawaj

Bhaskar started learning the Pakhawaj from Mridangacharya Rajib Lochan Dey at a very tender age and received extensive `taalim’ from his Guru.

After his demise, Bhaskar took further training from Pt. Jyan Prakash Ghosh. He has also taken some guidance from Pt. Bitthal Das Gujrathi and from Pt. Ramakant Pathak

 

 

Concerts By Bhaskar Mukherjee -

I have accompanied top of the line musicians of the country both in India and abroad. I would like to mention some of the names to whom I have accompanied -
Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar , Ustad Fariduddin Dagar , Ustad Ashad Ali khan , Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty, Pt. Falguni Mitra , Pt. Ratnakar Pai , Pt. A. Kannan , Pt. Monilal Nag , Ustad Ashish Khan , Pt. Shyamal Chatterjee and some junior artists like Tejendranarayan Majumdar , Partho Sarothy , Debashish Bhattacharya , Bahauddin Dagar and so on .

I have given successful concerts at various places in U.S.A. like Ali Akbar College of Music in California, University of Florida, San Diego, Dallas, New York, and San Francisco both as a solo artist and accompanist. I have also played in Toronto, Canada. In India, I have played in several prestigious musical conferences notably Swami Haridas Sangeet Sammelon, Kal-Ke-Kalakar Sangeet Sammelon, Benaras Dhrupad Mela , Brindavan Dhrupad Mela and so on .

Apart from these, I have played at many places in Eastern and Southern India.

I have played with Mr. Steve Lansberg’s Sur-Bahar at many places including French Embassy at Bangladesh.

Pt. Anindo Chatterjee had chosen me in his musical trio named `RHYTHMS OF BENGAL’ played by Pt. Anindo Chatterjee himself on the Tabla , Pt. Brajarakhal Das , on the Srikhole and me on the Pakhawaj .

I am performing at AIR & Doordarshan for the last twenty years both as a soloist and accompanist.

 

Teaching Experience

  • I was associated with Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar’s `DHRUPADASHRAM’ as a teacher for more than fourteen years.

  • I remained as a teacher at the 'GURUKUL’ in IIT, Mumbai, which was conducted by Ustad Fariduddin Dagar for one and a half years.

  • I have given several lectures cum demonstration in various musical institutions situated in India and abroad. For example – I have given lecture & demonstration at the Ali Akbar college of Music, California in the year 1997.

  • I have given taalim to some students practicing Dhrupad, and they are performing brilliantly. Some of them also fetched gold medals in their postgraduate degree from Rabindra Bharati University.

  • At present I am teaching music online at indianmusiclessons.com 

Other Musical Interests

I am a very serious student of Tabla and have been learning Tabla for the last twenty five years.

I have also learnt South Indian Mridangam from Vidwan Sri N. Shankar and from the great maestro Umayalpuram K. Shivaraman .

Apart from these, I am also capable of playing a variety of other percussion instruments. The instruments that I have successfully played in different programs are - Dhole, Srikhole, Manipuri Khole, Tasha , Kanjira , Ghatam , Tabla-Tarang etc.
