Arup Ratan Mukherjee
|
Born in the ancient city
of Pataliputra. Arup’s Talent in sitar blossomed initially under the
tutelage of his mother Smt. Nilakshi Mukharjee and later from Late Arun
Kumar Chatterjee. In August 1986, he was fortunate to be the disciple of
Sarod Mastero Pandit Jotin Bhattacharya of Varanasi who has dedicated
his life in performing and teaching very few students in the purest
tradition of
Indian Classical Music under his
blessing. |

Arup started his training in earnest by
learning the basics of Sitar playing. Over the years of single
minded Sadhana, he proved himself to be a talented artist to the sublime
music of Maihar Gharana that perpetuates the sacred tradition of Mian
Tansen.

Arup’s Sitar playing is characterized by the
elaborate alapchari in dhrupad ang, the intricate laykari, the tarparans
(Percussion patterns adapted to melodic instruments playing), the vast rag
reperting, including the Jod characteristic of this school, and exotic talas.
He is the founder trustee of Baba Alluddin
Khan Music Foundation.
This promotes Indian Classical Music and
upcoming artists through monthly Baithaks and major concerts. |

He has performed at
Jorasankho Thakur Bari (Kolkata), 100 Years of Chicago Sammelen (Ram Krishna
Mission (Patna), Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh (Varanasi), India Habitat
Centre (Delhi), India International Centre (Delhi), Russian Centre (Delhi)
Barabati Music and Dance Festival (Cuttack), Ustad Allauddin Khan Sangeet
Samaj (Kolkata), Baba Allauddin Kharn Music Foundation (Delhi), in presence
of Maharaja of Tripura (Kolkata), In presence of Maharaja of Jaipur (Jaipur),
Music For Pease And Harmony Concert ( India Habitat Center, Delhi)

He has also composed music for a documentary
film on sufism‘ Mastcalandar’, directed by Sri Rajeev Srivastava. Uniculture
Pex 2008 jointly organaised by Philatelic association & odissi nritaya
mandal in coperation with department of post Govt of India has relesed an
envelop featuring Arup Ratan on 20.12.2008.
