Arindam Sarma, Kolkata India

Arindam Sarma is one of today's very few male artists representing the Indore Gharana of Hindustani Classical Vocal Music.

Coming from a musical family, Arindam Sarma was introduced to Vocal Music at an early age of nine by his uncle Sri Arabinda Sarma. Early stage of music started with light songs along with some basic classical training from Sri Ahin Ghosh.

A Few years later he was under the talim of Acharya Usharanjan Mukherjee, a disciple of Ustad Amir Khan and Sri Tarapada Chakraborty, for eight long years. Now Arindam is receiving talim under the tutelage of music maestro and trainer Pandit Kamal Bandhopadhyay, who was a close associate and beloved disciple of the Ustad Amir Khan of Indore Gharana. Apart from classical music, Arindam has got formal training in light songs from Sri Biman Mukherjee, Sri Jaileswar Mukhopadhaya and Sri Subhendu Maity.

His Music Arindam is gifted with a very tuneful voice with equal ease over the total spectrum of more than three octaves. He has developed his own techniques in voice modulation through experimentation in the last 17 years; he has a keen sense of rhythm and a tremendous command over laya and taal.

His knowledge & virtuosity combined with devotional approach and a strong penchant for perfection, gives him a unique style of his own and an impeccable mastery over the Classical genre, which is always reflected in his mellifluous rendering of Khayal.

His specialization lies in rendering subtle and intricate movements of notes with strong emotion and perfect “Ragdari” in Vistar, stunning rhythmic variations in Bat & Boltan, fast and wide variety of effortless Tan & Sargam highlighting all forms such as Murchana, Alankar, Sapat, Halak, Gamak, Meerkhand etc. He has successfully synthesized the traditional genre of Indian Classical Music with his own individuality and as such, it is no wonder that he has enthralled the music lovers all over the country from a very tender age and still continuing in that endeavour.

Arindam is one of those very few musicians who can perform almost all subjects including light music like Ghazal, Bhajan, Modern song, Folk song etc with equal command which enriches the total quality of his music. Arindam has also excelled in academics by obtaining an Post Graduation in Systems Management from NIIT, Kolkata and established himself as a Computer software specialist. However he has infused all his academic education for fulfilling his mission of preaching Indian Classical Music.

Performances & Awards

Arindam's intense dedication and love for his art has won him quite a few laurels. Few of them are namely, THE DOVER LANE TALENT SEARCH AWARD in Thumri in 1989-90. He got the challenge trophy by securing highest score in different wings of vocal music in the WEST BENGAL MUSIC COMPETITION, in 1979-80. Apart from those mentioned prizes he won many more prizes in different subjects of music.
